An engagement ring is one of the most difficult types of jewelry to shop for. With so many setting options, diamond cuts, and styles available, finding a ring that feels as unique as your love—not to mention, something you’ll wear every day—can feel a tad overwhelming. If you’re on a quest to procure a split shank engagement ring, your stress ends here. Whether you’re looking for a more minimalistic design or something fully frosted with diamonds, this ring style automatically boasts a touch of unique detail with a band that splits and frames the diamond centerpiece.

One thing we love most about split shank engagement rings is how customizable they are. When choosing a stone for a split shank ring, expert Kimberly Haisch says “all stones work well” for this setting style and that it’s more so “a matter of personal opinion.” This makes finding one that feels like an extension of your bride-to-be all the more possible.

To help you out, we put together a collection of our favorite split shank engagement ring designs in a variety of styles, stones, metals, and price points.

When shopping for a split-shank engagement ring, the band will “often have a French-set or set with micropavé diamonds leading to the diamond of halo,” says Haisch. “Parting the band at the top allows for more surface to be occupied by these smaller diamonds and might increase the overall sparkle of your engagement ring, depending on the setting and clarity of the diamonds.

When designing an engagement ring of any type, including split shank, Haisch says to keep it personal. “An engagement ring is an overall symbol of love and oftentimes we treat them as family heirlooms,” says Haisch. “It’s all a matter of personal taste, making it unique to you and your partner,” Haisch adds.

A split-shank ring “has a visual gap between the hand and the center diamond or halo," according to Haisch. “The opening may give the effect of a larger and more ornate ring set," she says.

“All settings work perfectly for this style of engagement ring, and it’s important to make conscious decisions in your stone and band selections,” says Haisch, noting that if the ring includes larger diamond cuts like a princess or Asscher, “the band will be noticeably larger to accommodate the diamond.”

Not necessarily. “As with any style, the price will ultimately be determined by the four Cs—cut, clarity, color, and carat—and the quality of gold for the band,” says Haisch. “They tend to be more expensive with your choice of stones and gold when designing the ring, but it comes down to preference, how thick or thin, the number of stones, et cetera,” Haisch adds.
